Exposure to traumatic events and toxic levels of stress can negatively impact a child’s ability to learn, to form positive relationships, and to regulate behavior and emotions in the classroom. Trauma-informed school practices are designed to support children who have been negatively impacted by trauma and toxic stress, enabling them build the resilience that they need to heal from past trauma, to cope with ongoing toxic stress, and to self-regulate. Trauma-informed schools focus on providing a safe and caring learning environment that carefully nurtures the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development of students.
